Welcome to our community of adventurers! If you’re staying at our hostel and looking for travel tips on how to get from Bocas del Toro to Boquete, we’ve compiled the best experiences from previous guests to offer you a detailed and hassle-free guide. Follow these practical tips, based on real-life experiences, and ensure you make the most of your journey through Panama.

Winding road from Boquete to Bocas del Toro.
Route that connects Boquete with the tropical paradise of Bocas del Toro.

Our guests always highlight the tropical beauty of Bocas del Toro as a starting point. Most arrive on Isla Colón via a boat from Almirante, which costs around $10 round trip. A helpful tip is to remember that the taxi ticket is for both the outward and return trips, so be sure to hold on to your ticket for the return journey.

Several local companies offer this service, including Fabio, a friend of Joe’s Layover Hostel. His contact number is +507669631023.

If you’re looking for tranquility, many travelers prefer staying away from the busier areas and recommend Bastimentos, a nearby and less touristy island. The Green Coast Hotel, a small family-run establishment, has been frequently praised. Though the official rate is $45, some guests have managed to negotiate a $30 rate. It’s ideal if you’re seeking a relaxed atmosphere away from the hustle and bustle.

2. Exploring Bastimentos

Bastimentos Island offers plenty of outdoor activities for our more adventurous guests. The trails leading to beaches like Red Frog or Wizard come highly recommended. While some have reported walks of up to an hour to reach Red Frog, they’ve thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

If water activities are more your style, guests suggest renting canoes to explore the calm waters or booking tours, though they note that tours tend to be a bit more expensive in Bastimentos compared to Isla Colón.

3. Unforgettable Excursions in Bocas del Toro

One of the most exciting moments shared by our guests was a full-day excursion from Bastimentos, where they visited natural areas to see dolphins and sloths. While the experience of seeing these animals in their natural habitat was magical, some travelers expressed mixed feelings about intruding on the sloths’ space.

A highlight of the trip was the visit to Isla Zapatilla 2, a pristine island with white sandy beaches perfect for relaxing or flying drones. Several guests have described this spot as paradise.

4. Practical Tips for Returning from Bocas del Toro to Almirante

The return from Bocas del Toro to Almirante is easy. Most of our guests took the boat back for $10. Almirante doesn’t offer many attractions, so it’s generally not recommended to stay long. If you do need to stay overnight, Hotel 888 is a recommended budget option, with simple rooms for $25 per night.

For those traveling by car, Leiza Parking is the most reliable option at a cost of $3 per day. If you prefer public transport, buses run from Almirante to David, where you can then take another bus to Boquete.

Boquete: An Unforgettable Destination Any Time of the Year

When we think of Boquete, the first thing that comes to mind is its stunning mountain landscape and mild climate—a place that offers a unique experience no matter the time of year. My first visit to Boquete was in the heart of summer, between January and April, when the weather is simply perfect for exploring. This season is known as the dry season, but don’t be surprised if you catch the famous “bajareque” – a light mist that, though brief, leaves the vegetation an incredible shade of green. That first time, seeing rainbows adorning the mountains felt like stepping into a living postcard.

Exploring Boquete in the Summer (January to April)

Summer is definitely the best time if you want to make the most of outdoor activities. During my stay, I would wake up early to hike the trails and cool off in the rivers and waterfalls that seem to be around every corner. Without a doubt, one of the most unforgettable activities was hiking Volcán Barú. If you’re an adventure lover, this is a must-do. However, a crucial tip: since summer attracts a larger number of tourists, especially international ones, it’s essential to book your accommodation in advance. I had a hard time finding an available place, so I recommend avoiding that inconvenience by planning ahead.

The Serenity of the Rainy Season (May to November)

On the other hand, if you prefer a quieter and more relaxed atmosphere, the rainy season from May to November also has its charm. The weather is cooler, and the rainy days bring an unparalleled sense of calm. One of the things I enjoyed most during this time was waking up to cool, sunny mornings—ideal for strolling around town or visiting a coffee farm. Later, when the afternoon rains arrived, it was the perfect time to unwind with a cup of local coffee or enjoy a rum tour at a nearby distillery. Additionally, hostel prices tend to be lower, which is a great advantage if you’re traveling on a budget.

Events and Festivals: The Essence of Boquete

No matter when you decide to visit Boquete, you’ll always find something exciting to do. On my last trip, I was lucky enough to attend the Flower and Coffee Fair in January, a colorful and flavorful event that celebrates the region’s natural richness. If you’re a music lover, I also recommend planning your trip in February or March when the Jazz Festival takes place. The combination of great music with the mountain setting is an experience that connects you to the place in a magical way.

Panama’s diverse ecosystem makes it an ecotourism hotspot. You can trek through rainforests, explore remote beaches, and spot rare wildlife, all within a relatively small geographic area. For young backpackers, this means less time spent on transportation and more time exploring the outdoors.

Top National Parks to Visit in Panama

Darién National Park: Panama’s Largest and Most Remote Wilderness

Located in the southeast of the country, Darién National Park is Panama’s largest national park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s a dream for adventurous backpackers looking to explore untouched rainforests and observe wildlife like jaguars, tapirs, and harpy eagles. While the park is remote, its isolation preserves its biodiversity, making it a must-visit for those seeking a raw and authentic experience.

Soberanía National Park: A Birdwatcher’s Paradise

For backpackers interested in birdwatching, Soberanía National Park is a top destination. Located near Panama City, this park is home to the famous Pipeline Road, where you can spot hundreds of bird species in just one day. The park also offers accessible hiking trails and the chance to see monkeys, sloths, and more in their natural habitat.

La Amistad International Park: Shared Natural Wonder

La Amistad International Park is a unique transboundary park that Panama shares with Costa Rica. Backpackers can hike through cloud forests, visit indigenous communities, and explore one of the most biodiverse areas in the world. The park is an excellent destination for those looking to combine cultural experiences with ecological exploration.

Wildlife Encounters in Panama’s National Parks

Panama’s national parks are home to an incredible range of wildlife, from the iconic harpy eagle to the elusive jaguar. Some of the species you might encounter include:

  • Harpy Eagle: Panama’s national bird, often spotted in Darién National Park.
  • Jaguar: The largest cat in the Americas, found in remote areas like Darién.
  • Manatee: A gentle aquatic mammal that inhabits Panama’s coastal areas.
  • Tapir: Central America’s largest land mammal, frequently seen in La Amistad Park.
  • Bird Species: Including tanagers, parrots, and toucans, especially in Soberanía and other forested parks.

Supporting Local Communities Through Ecotourism

One of the best aspects of ecotourism in Panama is its positive impact on local communities. By visiting national parks, you support jobs for local guides, eco-lodge staff, and artisans. Many communities surrounding these parks offer accommodations, guided tours, and other services tailored to eco-conscious travelers. Whether you’re staying in a community-run guesthouse or enjoying a locally prepared meal, your visit contributes to the well-being of the region.

How to Get the Most Out of Your Visit

Choose Low-Impact Activities

Backpackers can minimize their environmental footprint by choosing low-impact activities such as hiking, wildlife photography, and birdwatching. Panama’s parks are designed to accommodate these activities while preserving the natural environment.

Plan Your Trip Around Key Destinations

While Panama is small, its terrain is diverse. By planning your itinerary around key parks like Darién, Soberanía, and La Amistad, you’ll experience the full range of ecosystems, from rainforests to cloud forests and coastal areas.

The Future of Ecotourism in Panama

Ecotourism in Panama continues to grow as more travelers seek sustainable and meaningful experiences. The government, through the Ministry of Environment (MiAmbiente), is committed to expanding ecotourism into lesser-known regions such as Veraguas and Coclé, providing new opportunities for exploration.

New Ecotourism Destinations

For adventurous backpackers, provinces like Veraguas and Coclé are emerging as new ecotourism hotspots. These regions offer pristine landscapes, diverse wildlife, and opportunities for both adventure and cultural tourism.

Conclusion

Panama’s national parks offer young European backpackers a unique opportunity to explore untouched landscapes, encounter rare wildlife, and support sustainable tourism. By visiting these parks, you’ll not only experience Panama’s natural beauty but also help protect its ecosystems for future generations.
